Top Five Reasons to Adopt Sigmund

There is no disputing that kittens are really cute and entertaining, but with all their energy comes a whole lot of messiness.

Over the years I've had many kittens and cats. One litter of kittens destroyed a new sofa as they used it as their personal jungle gym. Developing litterbox habits usually means litter is everywhere as they dig deep and sweep their paws far behind them with litter following. And nothing is better for a kitten than a clean litterbox to soil as soon as it hits the floor.

When kenneling the adoption centers for both non-profit rescue organizations I volunteered for, we would have to kennel the kitten enclosures twice, because they would trash them in short order. I have to admit that while it was frustrating, they kept me laughing.

I'm not poo-pooing adopting a kitten, but let's explore the benefits of adopting an adult cat like Sigmund. Here are the top five reasons for doing so:

  1. Lower energy level. For busy professionals and families they require less supervision than a kitten.

  2. What you see is what you get. It's hard to tell what kind of an adult cat a kitten will grow into. We know Sigmund enjoys human attention and is affectionate.

  3. Maturity means good habits. That means less time spent training and more time building a loving bond.

  4. Purrfect for families. Kittens can play rough whereas a cat like Sigmund is mellow.

  5. Feel good about giving a homeless cat a home. Sigmund was abandoned by his pet parent. He now lives his life in a feral cat colony. (See our post of June 16 for a video of Sigmund).
