Cat Behavior Out of Character, Raccoons Scarce

(Jan. 20, 2023: The Morning Feeding Report) As soon as I drove up to our largest feral cat feeding location this morning I knew something wasn’t right. The cats’ behavior was out of character. Typically, when I drive up to this location, one of three locations where we feed feral cats twice a day, a handful of the 15 or so cats come running out to greet me. Not today. Not a single cat. And not a single raccoon was present.

Over the last couple of weeks, the “greeter” crowd of cats has become smaller, which coincides with Socks One having gone missing. We’re concerned there are other cats that have gone missing too.

When I made my second stop to feed this morning, most of the cats were present and accounted for with the exception of Merlin, a beautiful Siamese. Again, no raccoons. Weird and concerning.

While we have concerns, we do know that many of the 102 cats we have spayed/neutered and vaccinated since 2018 leave the Village for what we hope are greener pastures. As a matter of fact, one of our original ferals we called Azul, a gorgeous Siamese, was seen living in a nearby mobile home park where we have had trapping efforts. Another cat, Sterling, a handsome Mane Coon, comes and goes. We know he eats in a community abutting the Village.

Still, we worry.

Tonight, we will put out our field camera to see if we can identify what is causing this unusual behavior among the Village cats and raccoons.
